I may just be getting redundant and asking silly questions but this did cross my mind. My tank is in my bedroom which at night time I have to turn on my ceiling fan light to see. I was wondering if this could disturb my reef tank? Zoos seem to open up and fish come alive while the light is on then close up when it is off. Could this on/off open/close have a negative effect?

In natural environment, they have sunny day and cloudy days or scattered cloudy days where the sun is on and off like your room light. Sorry for using such a mundane analogy. My point is . your corals should be fine.

the fish will adjust to it. and I swore I read somewhere that getting polyps to open and close is healthy exercise for them... I forgot where.

I asked the same question a while back, when I got my first SW tank. All hours of the night,I'd have the room light on because I wanted to always see my tank;D

I'm going to go against the general opinion of this thread, and say that turning the room lights on and off, when the display lights have turned off, is not a good thing for the fish. It creates a more stressful and inconsistent environment, and makes them more prone to disease. Fish do become more accustomed to it over time, but, even at that point, it is not a good thing, and must still cause some level of stress. I believe reasons like this are why white spot sometimes appears in otherwise good tanks. Minimizing external stresses, such as nearby TVs, lights, music etc, is of understated importance.

I'm not sure about corals. However, many photosynthetic cells need a dark period to perform the "dark reactions". If the lights are turning on/off, it is possible those reactions are being interrupted. However, in the end, it may have an insignificant impact on the corals.

Yep turning the light on and off consistently will stress the fish out but I think that Hurley means that his room lights are on for a certain time period and then they come off later in the night.

How about a dimmer switch to slowly raise and lower light? I personally feel the fish have to accept things but with that said a dimmer wouldn't hurt. I have a dimmer where I keep the fish tank.

Listen....we alter our lives enough for these fish tanks we have...we're all nuts!

If you need your light on...put it on.
