Came home from work yesterday and opened the door to be greeted (for the third day in a row only progressively worse) to a very fishy/nasty smell. My tank is 2 months old, cycled and has had the normal bloom of diatoms and what I thought was cyano. Did a water change after tank cycled. The stuff was everywhere. I added a cuc and they were working on it. I added some carbon in the sump (in a bag under the flow from the dt) a week ago. All parameters have been perfect; amm. = 0, 'trites = 0, 'trates = 0, ph = 8, s.g. = 1.025. A few days ago my skimmer started pulling crazy skimmate, dark smelly stuff that I had to dump every night. Now the brown algae/diatoms/whatever it was is completely gone, like overnight, and the cuc didn't do it that quickly. I think the smell is from the algae that died off. Does this sound right? I'm scheduled for a water change this weekend.

yea that could be it. Did you feed the tank to get it to cycle? are you still feeding it if you did? Has any of your clean up crew died?

Agreed. What brand carbon, how much, and how old?

I did, in conjunction with Dr Tim's O&O. Tank went through it's normal cycle, within a couple of weeks. Never added any fish, was waiting for the tank to go through its algae/diatom bloom. Only thing I added was some blue-legs, a couple of tubos, and ceriths. Didn't want to overstock the cuc then have a die-off. I do have some chaeto in my 'fuge, but it looks ok, doesn't seem to be in trouble

Only thing i can think of was if you "fed" the tank for the cycle, bacteria/algae grew, then you stopped feeding the tank all that had nothing to eat and died off. And unless you are feeding the clean up crew they will likely die off as well.

Hmmm. That makes perfect sense. I guess I should start feeding the tank SMALL doses and get a fish in there! Never thought I would wait too long to add a fish...

I cycled my tank for three months. Never smelled or anything.
If you were going for a long cycle I wouldn't have used o&o. Infact, I would never use it or any of the bacteria additives.

When you did wc. Was there some exposed algae. When i do a wc and for whaterver reason i dont fill the tank up fully ( ie didnt make enough water etc..) thats when i get a bad smell. Any algae epxposed to air just stinks.
