you want to keep your room temp at least at 76, if your room temp is above your tank temp eventually your tank will absorb that heat thus raising your tank temp

doesn't matter the tank temp is what is important.

however a hot room may make a chiller necessary, a cold room will make a heater necessary.

Must be nice to have to worry about heaters. It's still 95+ here in Texas! My chiller would love a break :)

It is a dry heat, yeah right !
During the winter the heater should be able to maintain the temperature without keeping the your home heater at the same temp as the desired tank temp. If your average room temp runs around 80 F I would set the tank heater for 80 degress so you do not have temp swings.

It was plenty 95+ in Jersey this summer, but our house never went above the scorching temperature of 73 ;D

I hear you Raven. We stayed at 73-74. I just got a chiller on Ebay. Should have it in a week or so. Even at 73 my tank was topping 82

Well my room temp usually fluctuates from 70-75 this time of year. I am lucky and live in the basement :) When my K-2 Vipers kick on its like a hot box in my place. The ballasts put off alot of heat. So i have used a small window a/c unit to keep my room temp around 70 degrees. Fall is approaching though so now i can open my windows in the evenings and get some nice cool air in. :) Ive found that if my room temp stays around 70 when the lights are on, the tank only raises from 76 to 79. I was using fans but they were actually doing to well of a job at cooling the tanks and i had crazy fluctuations. I had to keep turning them off and on. Up and down my temps went. I think i found a good balance. In the winter its easier to control temps because my MH are working against nature and not along with the blazing hot sun of summer!
