I have had a rose Anemone for a couple month's now, The disk or the area around the mouth is turned to a dark almost black color. Any idea's why the disk would get dark like this? The tentacles at the lower part are also a dark color instead of the reds or pale color it was at the store. The only water issues I have are a bad rash of Cyano which will be gone soon. I put in Chemi-Clean from Boyd's earlier today. Also the tank temp is in the lower 80's. around 80 to 84 for the most part? Would it be the temp or the cyano or something altogether different? any help or advice would be great. It is being hosted (or harrassed) by a Gold banded maroon clown. thank you all

how old is the tank, what kind of lighting?...if you have cyano, you have too high of nitrates for an anemone

the tank is a 6 bulb t-5 lighting over a 55 gal 48 long. the tank is about a year and a half old. I know the nitrates are to high for the time being. It will change soon. Just a temp problem. the rose only changed the color over the past 48 hours. thnx man be cool

is the temp of the tank 80 or 84...thats a BIG temp difference..at 80-82 things can run and live normal...at 84 things will start to die, too hot, not enough oxygen...that sort of thing..

    Temperature won't affect nitrate levels....

exactly...thats what i was getting at..the spike in nitrate is likely doing the harm to the nem...along with the temp being too high at 84

Anemones generally need cooler water, 80 and below are recommended. They need higher amounts of oxygen than most tank inhabitants from what I understand. Anemones (and other zooxanthellae coral) are known to morph color over their lifetimes, due to the temperature of the lighting they are under. I had a GBTA that morphed to a rose. My current GBTA is now turning into a rich tan/green.
Turning darker is much better than it bleaching though. Is it still responding normally?

There are a couple of "rose" anemones. Big ones and little ones about the size of a US Quarter. Which one are you referring to?

I keep several of the smaller variety (though I tend to call them rock anemones). They do not like warm water... they barely open if tank gets over 80.

They also hate nitrates. If you have cyano, you also have cyano on the nem, which irritates it.

I have never seen any of nems morph color though and I'm on my 3rd set of bulbs - each set a totally different temp combo...
