How do you tell if rotfiers are dead or not? Will they be on the bottom or top of the bucket?

Generally if you don't see them swimming around (use a magnifying glass) and the water stinks, they are usually dead. Put some phyto in the water, you should see them going after the phyto, and the water should clear up after an hour if they are alive.

Just shine a very bright light on the container and the rots will swim towards the light.
I find it hard to kill the suckers unless you just don't feed them enough.
The blasted things seem to fly through the air and contaminate my nanno cultures, wiping out a container every now and then.
