Does anyone know what type of rubbermaid tub is best for a sump?  I'm wanting to increase the size of my sump to 50g and want to use a rubbermaid tub.  There are different ratings on the recycling numbers on the tubs.  Some are 2, 4, and 5.  # 2 is made from high density polyethylene.  #4 is made from low density polyethylene and #5 is made from polypropylene.  One of these stands up better to salt water and does not become brittle and crack with age.  Any input would be much appreciated.  Thanks!

I would say the HDPE would be better.... i use it for borehole instalation, and they last years in corosive environments..

    Hope that helps,

I did some research on plastics on the web and found that tubs made of polypropylene are the most corrosion resistant to sea water (recycle triangle with the #5) and high density polyethylene (recycle #4) being the next best.

I think HDPE is a little thicker and will be more forgiving of little knocks and bumps that will inevitably happen when cleaning equipment....just a thought!

Use this link to evaluate HDPE and PP. Select the resin and the select "Food and Bev use Rating 7"....you will see the characteristics of both. There are other properties you can select as well......

Hope this helps....(both are perfectly fine in my opinion)
