Rust infiltrating tank!

    if vinegar got into the tank... is that harmful to livestock?

    Not if you keep it to a small amount. That is why you put it on a rag to keep leaking down.

    the MH bulbs were replaced last month... the lights were 1 year old... I changed the t5's at the same time

    BTW: my wife has apple cider vinegar... will that work?

    Saltwater can pretty much breakdown almost any metal especially when electricity is present, thus being called electrolysis. This is more common in the boating world. But getting back to your question. It could be algae as been stated. If it was rust from the legs, there would be a trail that would stain bad, even your glass tank. It just doesn't sprinkle in your tank.

    Most algae requires iron to grow, so this could be a contributor to his problem, along with excessive nutrients.

    Oh boy.... Rule number one. NEVER bring ANYTHING to your tank that could contaminate it. You want to use white vinegar. Again, away from the tank. It is like an acid bath to livestock if direct contact.

    great... cleaning this with white vinegar is going to be a nightmare...
    After cleaning and using rustoleum.... should I shut lights off COMPLETELY for a period of time... to see if this alleviates anything.
