Well, I had hooked up a chiller to my RSM 250 last weekend. Throughout the week, my inverts and coral were dying. The serpent and brittle star died, and even the bristle worms were being affected (have never known anything to be more hardy than bristle worms...).

So I didn't know why this was occurring. The reducer I have for my tubing is brass (thought problem might have been copper). So I was examining the plumbing and found a rusty hose clamp. And it was in the tank, keeping the tubing hooked up to the pump.

Could this have been the issue that killed everything? I replaced all of my hose clamps with all stainless steel ones this morning. I hear stainless steel of a certain kind won't rust even in saltwater.. Anyways, will I ever be able to add coral or inverts to the tank? And what kind of hose clamps do you guys recommend for the future?

It may be a while, but I would start running plenty of carbon and check out a product called cuprisorb,it aids in the removal of copper and I would imagine other toxic metals as well. Then after a couple wc's,try a couple snails and see what happens.Or at least, that is what I would do.

No prob, but I would hang on a bit and see if anyone else chimes in.As fast as this hobby evolves there may even be a better metal remover out there now that i'm not aware of.

I wouldn't use any kind of metal clamps in the fishtank. They sell plastic clamps.;)
You can also use a Poly pad to remove toxins/metals.

Brass is copper! Just mixed with zinc to harden it. Buy a plastic reducer asap, run carbon, polyfilter, and do a wc

Oh jeez! Thanks you guys! I didn't know brass was copper.. so replace the reducer with plastic, and replace the clamp with plastic.. can I find these at home depot? Or would online be better? And should I shut off the chiller pump off to keep more copper from leaching into the tank? Thanks!
