Is rust bad for your tank? as in will it have major ill effects? for example if you have a clamp on a hose or something that has some metal that gets exposed to water and rusts, will it hurt your tank???

    -Daniel

P.S. On a side note, is brass bad? like could i just get a swamp cooler float valve too hook up an auto-top off for my tank?

Yeah rust is bad for reef tanks. My experience with this - going back few years mind you - is that it's a great way to melt anemones and probably other soft stuff. I believe brass is bad too. Go stainless or plastic.

Even stainless will rust over time. I would recommend staying away from any metal in your tank save those like titanium probes, etc.

I use pull strips for my hoses. I hope you know what I'm talking about. You put one end through a catch and pull the other end tight...not a pressure tight never gonna remove fitting, but will hold hoses together pretty good. I've never had one come off yet. Mine are plastic acrylic hose to PVC...and they make a tool that you put the end of the strip in(like a pair of pliers, but...) and when you squeeze the handles, it tights the strip hard, more than had tightening...

    hope this helps..
