Well, there it is. 65 gallon tank has been up and running about a week now with a little bit of live rock and sand mixed with some dried base and sand. A couple of snails have appeared this week. So today I decided it was time to offer up the sacrificial shrimp to the cycling gods! I also fired up the skimmer today as well. So I hope to see some measurable ammonia tomorrow when I test the water.8)

IMO your better off not running the skimmer till the tank is cycled. add some live bacteria to your tank if you want it to cycle faster

I wondered about starting the skimmer to early. I don't honestly think there should be much to skim at this point. Should I turn it off for now?

OK, skimmer is off, thanks for the heads up! Another funny thing was when I went to the seafood counter at my grocery store and I was looking at the shrimp. I forgot there were so many choices! I finally decided on a type and sheepishly asked for "2 please"! The guy behind the counter kind of laughed and said yea, you think that's funny I got a guy that comes in once a week a buys 5 pounds for his salt water tank! That's when I confessed that's what I was buying them for!;D

Did you find info somewhere saying to wait a week to add the shrimp? I just put water/live rock/live sand in my tank today and wasn't sure if I should add the shrimp now or wait ?

No, I just wanted to make sure I had salinity levels and temperature stabilized as well as my sump situated and running the way I wanted. I think you could go ahead any time. I will say the sacrificial shrimp has begun to share a not so pleasant aroma with us land dwellers. It's either that or some of the live rock?

this way is so old school live bacteria works. i don't understand why anyone would cycle with a piece of shrimp or live fish. i have to say this is so much better than going the live fish route though.
