Thanks Corailline. Using BRS's Lignite carbon, and I understood that carbon loses it's effectiveness after a few days of running in the system? I have a shallow sand bed, and it was really to stir up the detritus.

Thanks John. Sounds like the consensus is to change carbon every two weeks and avoid stirring the entire sandbed twice weekly, so I will do this.

I'm going to switch the doser I was using for vodka for alk dosing. Havent hooked it up yet, and since I'll be out of town over the weekend (Vegas BABY!), I'll wait until next week to hook it up to avoid any potential problems.

I switched up my bulbs a little too... too blue for my taste. Now running 2 blue plus, 1 aquablue special, and 1 purple plus.

 

Nice update, Lucas! Its VERY cool to get advice from Cheryl and John, cant go any wronger than that, those reef gurus are awesome!

I really hope that you get the fuzzy sticks back. Keep us updated.

Great news... arrived home from Vegas to find all three frags showing great PE! The green slimer is a very shaggy stick. Now I just need to monitor growth. I plan on hooking part 2 of the two part (alk dose) to the doser tonight.

ALSO... equipment in the mail and headed my way. ;D

Lots of rusty-brown diatoms on the sandbed right now, somwhat expected from the shift from carbon to macroalgae and bringing fuge back online. Somehow, I dont mind so much since I'm seeing fuzzy sticks.

 

Finally!!! Congrats on the improvement, the Vegas brought you some luck anyhow! I knew I'd hear good news sooner than later, I'm happy for you!

And what's in the mail? VorTech??

 

Haha, and we actually came out of Vegas ahead. Well, I did with my poker winnings, but then the boss spent half the winnings on slots, and the other half at Coach.

No Vortech yet. I dont feel I'm out of the woods yet, and have a long way to go before I can justify that investment.

But to come home and see those shaggy sticks, really gave me a much needed lift in spirits.

 

I'm glad to hear the frags are showing good PE. Just keep monitoring them and keep your params stable and you are definitely well on your way. Glad to hear you did well in Vegas, hopefully a Vortech down the road. ;D

 

Update:

Did a larger 25% wc today for the heck of it, changed out carbon, and rearranged the left side while I was at it. I like it more, and the rock is off the back glass, which was the overall goal (eliminate deadspots).

Tested Alk before the wc, and it's dropped from 10 to 8 in 5 days on the auto doser, so clearly I did not have it set to dose enough daily.

I'm also getting this wierd growth on my rocks. Dark brown/grey, will sometimes blow off with a good heavy blast. Not sure if its algae or bacteria, but I'm leaning towards bacteria.

New frags still showing good PE. No noticable discolorations yet. Still playing with the white balance settings.
