Sorry to hear about your losses:( i recently went through a six day power outage and lost no fish and only a couple of mushrooms I was trying to frag. I don't remember how cold it was outside, but it was probably in the 40's. I did a few different things. It was kind of crazy, but we were the only ones I heard of with no losses.

    1. battery powered air pumps
    2. wrapped the tank in blankets for insulation
    3. I boiled water on the stove to keep the temp up in my 1 bdrm apartment
    4. 2x daily small water changes- I heated these up to about 90 degrees and added it very slowly. I tried to keep the temp at 68-72 at all times

I didn't feed at all during this time, and obviously there were no lights. Most of the coral looked a bit shriveled for a couple of days, but besides the mushroom frags everything came back beautifully. Other people I told about this thought I was nuts, but hey, it worked right? Good luck in the future

With the money we put into corals and fish, I think it's wise to invest in a gas generator.

So sorry to hear of your losses :(
Even a small generator will run most of our tanks. At the price of a couple corals Its worth it!

Living in New England i wouldn't dream of skipping the above.. I'm in the process of building a new tank, It'll go "live" early spring (to avoid this winters power outages, which are sure to happen!).. Then come summer i'll buy a generator big enough to power the saltwater setup when needed..

we have approximately 5-10 power outages every year... could be a few hours or a few days, but it's not a risk i'm willing to take.

Sorry for your loss Oldfishkeeper! just think.. it could have been a LOT worse!

When I'm out of college, I'm definitely looking into getting a yellowtop battery that will automatically give power to everything (maybe not one of the two pumps) when the power goes out. That should last a decent while, and theoretically if it gets low I could take it to the car and charge it if I had to (I'm assuming I won't be in a house so a generator wouldn't be an option).

That sucks about the what happened to you. If it gets that cold outside where you live, I'd definitely find the cash for a generator. Maybe you can at least get a good deal on one in the spring or something.
