I have had my sailfin for about a year and after reading some of these posts about them i am wondering if it may be time to take it back to the LFS because he just might be outgrowing my tank. I have a 120 48x24x24, the tang is about 6 inches long. What do you guys think. Another concern I have is that if I do take him back it would really be bad if he ended up in a tank even smaller than mine. I thought about getting a bigger tank but the other half quickly put a stop to that, Here i thought a guest bedroom meant a bigger room for another tank, was i ever wrong

I think it should still be ok for that size tank, it's a pretty big tank. If it gets 8-10in. then you may want to start to consider it. Although you do bring up a good point, it could easily end up in a smaller tank.

+1 for me on Guitarmans comments
the 24 width makes a big difference to me, if it where a 48 inch long with a standard width then if it where mine, I would have similar concerns to you

JMHO , But I think you should have awhile befor you have to do anything..

You have an 120 gal tank.. Does it have good room to swim..??
Check with a local club for someone with a very large tank..

I also have a sailfin, that one day.. I'll have to find a new home for..
When I bought it, I didn't know how big they could get..

    Good Luck, Larry

If I were you I would try to find someone local with a very large tank and give it to them rather than sell it back to the LFS.

Peace of mind that my pet has a good home is worth more than the money they would give me for the fish. Thats just my opinion though.

I agree, if you think he's getting too big give it to someone you trust with a larger tank. IMO though your Sailfin will be OK in a 120 gallon.

Ok I don't think he's too big for your tank now but you are seeing the guy grow and you know that he will be barring somthing bad from happening. If I were you, I would start lookikng for someone to give the fish to. You have plenty of time to find the right home so don't sweat it.

Hmmm....I'm kinda in the same situation myself. I just overhauled my 90 gal and now have the fish quarantined in a 45 gal pending a tough decision. I have 3 med sized fish that I feel bad about getting rid of. A foxface, yellow tang, and sailfin tang. All are about 4.5". They've live together peacefully with all the other inhabitants in a FOWLR for 3 years and now I'm going to more of a reef. Should I get rid of them now rather than put them in the tank and regret it later? I hate to have to stir my tank getting them out. Unless there is a easy way to do it later than I don't have to stress over this decision. Maybe a fish trap? Does it work?

i would definently start trying to get rid of him.it may take awhile to find a home for him.you csan sell him, trade him,or just get a bigger tank, but like you said your other half may not agree on getting a bigger tank for just 1 fish so you gotta pitch it the right way.(i would defnently try it tho)lol gl
