anybody think 500w of halide and i think 96watts of pc is gonna be overkill for a 40 gallon..all these guys that owns these fish stores around here always say that they would put as much light over a tank as they could

haha, well, anyone saying that has never heard of photosaturation or photoinhibition I take it. Both are about intensity, not duration though so you can't just shorten the photoperiod. See if you can borrow par meter. Most corals will handle 200-300 PAR fine, although there are exceptions. 500 is pushing it for many, but ok for some light loving corals. If your getting up to 1000 even some of your SPS might not be happy. Clams will be fine with even a little more than that though actually.

But seriously, go to a local reef club and search around. If someone has a PAR meter, then theres no guessing. I would think it would be a bit too much. MY LTA really took off once I got rid of my 2x250s on my 55g and switched to PCs. But it depends on the ballast bulbs, reflector, height etc... The only way to tell for sure is try it, or get a PAR meter.

yeah my dad has a par meter at his warehouse ill grab it and check..so m you think ill be better off with his 4bulb t5 fixture 48"..over the double halide fixture..right now over the tank i have 2x39w t5s with ati bulbs and individual reflectors..i also have my 250 sunpod i could put over it but would have to find a way to hang it..

Tank looks good so far. Lots more real estate to play with.

it is a huge difference in size as the 29..i really think a 40breeder is the best all around size..not too big but not too small.

Either would be sufficient and would use less energy. I'm still curious to see what kind of PAR you get with the other fixture though ;D
