Guys, this is something that's been bothering me since earlier today when I got my test kit delivered.

This test kit comes with the KH-lnd solution, a big KH reactor bottle and a smaller "Alkalinity Check Solution 7.2 dKH +/- 0.3"

Now in the following link are the exact test instructions that came with my test kit:

    Salifert KH/Alkalinity Test Kit Details

The problem is, that I know specially with Salifert kits, that you need to follow instructions step by step to get accurate readings, but in those instructions, they completely omitted what to do with the Alkalinity check solution bottle!!!
They don't even mention it at all!

Now, I'm assuming, with big chances of messing this up, that I need to "wise drop" this AK check solution to the 4 ml of tank water, after adding the 2 drops of the KH-lnd solution.

    Making the steps like this:

1- Add 4 ml (or 2 for the low res) of tank water to the test vial.

2- add 2 drops (1 for low res) of KH-lnd solution

3- With the tiny syringe get 1 ml of the Alk check solution and wise-drop until some color changes from whatever to whatever???

    Am I right?

I can't believe they forgot to say what to do with the 3rd bottle and it's killing me!

Please, let me know what's up with this.

    Thank you!

The check solution is used instead of water to verify the test kit has not become contaminated. It is not needed during normal testing.

This was included in the test kit because of issues with the ALK test kits in the past

+1 to jason it's basically a calibration solution so you know your kit is still good

Thanks for the reply. I still think they should attach instruction even on how to use this calibration formula.
Is that posted somewhere? What should the result be in order to determine if the test kit is good or bad?

Sorry for my persistence. I just can't let this go that easily. Specially without directions from them on how to calibrate it! :(

So, just replace the 4 ml of water with this solution and what should the result be for a good test?

use the solution instead of saltwater and it should come out to 7.4 DKH +/- 0.3

:oops:I see. Thanks for the help. There was no way I could have known what to do with that. In fact, I thought the Alk check bottle was the actual Alkalinity test, while the other one carbonate hardness itself.

I apologize again for my ignorance. And I appreciate the help. I love this forum! :sweethear

No, Jason. There's a "best before" date, and a warning to "close bottle tightly after use."
Don't feel bad, Magnus. I've been confounded by this for months myself. I've asked the same question. I'm glad to have an answer too. :)

I also was wondering what was that bottle for. I cant remember if the instructions say how to use it or not, but Im pretty sure my instructions dont say a thing. Thanks to this thread, now I know.

I'm glad we got the help we needed. My bottle doesn't say anything but what Luna said. Just to close tightly after each use. And the instructions have absolutely no mention of what to do with it or what is it for.

    Now we know ;)
