Please help my salinity fluxuates up and down. Not quite sure what is going on. I like to run a 1.024 but it continuouly drops down to 1.022. I do have a top off line and know all about the evaporation thing. Thank you.

Hrm, it drops? Would that be when you add your topoff water?

Question above is on track... how is salt leaving your system?? I lose salt through wet skimming and spillage while messing with the tank. I replace it as I go.... but never let it stray more than 0.001 from 1.025.

I have been told hydrometers do not always read accurately. I tested this on mine, and after 5 tests in a row, there was some variation in the readings. I have also been told digital hydrometers (not sure of the proper name) are the way to go.

Perhaps that is your problems if you are using a "manual" hydrometer.

Hydrometers are notoriously inaccurate. I'd HIGHLY recommend looking into getting a refractometer. They are under $40 and much more reliable and accurate.

Refractometer, that's what I was thinking of in my earlier post.

These aren't really written as an article, but they are my notes that I am building up on various topics. This may help on salinity and SG in general.
