I've been reading through the threads this morning on these crabs.

I'm getting conflicting info and search seems to be focusing on old threads for some annoying reason.

My LFS got several of these in. Some are pretty small. I was thinking about getting one for my reef tank - 55gal.

I am trying to ascertain this info before I buy it:

Will it bother my emerald crabs? Snails?

I do not feed my emerald, it survives by its own cleverness. Will the sally be same or will it need spot feeding? Do they just eat algae or do they need meat too?

    Any special considerations needed?

I'm thinking this will be an active member of my CuC. Agreed?

    Thanks all.

I have no personal experience, but I do agree with you. From what I know, they are safe scavengers. I have seen them in the same tank as emeralds in a LFS before, for what it's worth.

I have only had one and it will be the last one I ever put in my tank. While fascinating to look at they are just plain mean.

I have had 2 in my tank for maybe 3 weeks

I have been advised that they may pose a risk to fish when they get bigger

they are very timid - they are scared of fish, they get spooked by snails
they are spooked by each other

they spend most of their time scraping at the rockwork and they clean the spots they work on very well

they occasionally work the sand bed taking grains in to clean them and drop them again

3 weeks is not a lot of time I appreciate

but I am a fan of what I have seen them do thus far

Be careful Steve they can and do attack fish sometimes but my main concern was when I saw one rip the food right out of the mouth of one of my corals. I don't trust crabs in general. Snails can do the same job.IMO
p.s. I was so mad at that crab I took my feeding stick and took a poke at him and believe it or not I scored a direct hit. I couldn't believe it just like Tom Hanks in Castaway.lol I felt really bad afterwards

I have a sally light foot with my existing two emerald crabs. One emerald is smaller than the sally light foot and one is larger. I have not seen it pick on either of the emerald crabs and it is pretty timid. It does sometimes go a little crazy when I feed and move stuff or knock over some frags as it tries to get some food but for the most part it pretty much just picks off the rocks. I have only had mine for about a month or two but without any problems yet.

thanks all, please keep the experiences coming... I haven't heard enough yet to make a decision to get it or not.

For those of you that have it, how did you acclimate? Just temp?

    I dripped Peredil

    basically floated bag for temp
    poured contents gently into bowl
set up airline syphon and allowed water in bowl to treble in volume
and then lifted crabs out and into DT
