Took the wife to the fish store and what do you know, she finds something she likes that I know nothing about.

So, is this crab reef safe? Would it be safe with peppermint shrimps and cleaner shrimps?

coral safe yes, but all crabs will eat what they can catch be it precious live stock or crap blowing in the current.

I have had a couple for about 1 month or so
I have been informed they may pose a threat to fish as they get larger

up till now they have not bothered anything except algae
they scute away at the merest hint of an approach by my 2 wrasse
they are routinely spooked by each other - its a competition to see which one of them backs of the fastest and furthest

they have not bothered my cleaner or blood shrimp up until now

they have been head down focused on grabbing stuff from the rockwork and under just actinics they venture out onto the sand bed and clean that one grain at a time

they are the hardest workers in my CUC IMO much better at getting closer to the rockwork in their efforts to get food than my hermits are

I do accept that they dont come without risk
but my early opinion is they are very good at the task I introduced them for

    mine have consumed bubble algae
they also consumed a small amount of grape caulerpa I had on my avatar coral

all in all pleasant experience for me at this stage

Just wait till they get bigger, Steve LOL.

They can be quite aggressive once they get settled in & more so when they get some growth on them.

Thanks. Looks like it's back to the LFS tomorrow to pick this thing up.

I've already said no to a purple lobster. I'm trying to get her more interested in the hobby so telling her no to this would not have helped.

I would go with the SLF, I'm pretty sure only one gender gets ridiculously big(for a small crab) and the other only gets moderately big.

The problem with the lobster is you will never see him if you have any rocks in there. But I would strongly caution you against the sally lightfoot. I don't trust crabs in general anyway but these are just mean.
