This may not be the best spot for this - but it is a sort of ID this.

I'm pretty sure this is what is referred to as "salt creep".

I'd like my thinking to be confirmed or corrected.

Is this simply salt from the tank? Can I knock it back into the water? I did knock a small piece back in and it quickly dissolved.

    thanks

Yep. Salt creep. Be thankful you dont live up here, that what my creep looks like in less than 24 hours. I just wipe it off with a damp paper towel. Try to not make a habit of knocking back in the tank, but I dont think it hurts too much if some does happen to get back in there.

I suppose this is getting further away from "ID This", but I'm interested to know if knocking it back in will help maintain my SG over the long run.

I know we'd only be talking very small amounts, ultimately. But I'm just curious.

I couldn't find any good info on this question from google.

Technically, yes. Not by anything noticeable I wouldn't think. I always knock the creep back into my tank/sump/fuge. Just make sure it doesn't land on/in any corals.

im not sure, once i had a owner of the lfs, usually was pretty knowledgible(good guy, even if his livestock prices were high), any way he said that if your salt hardens in the bucket from moisture, the salt won't dissolve correctly in the water and the trace elements won't be distributed through out the water. i guess that would apply to salt creep too. but i never checked this info. i don't understand it. but i don't think he was trying to sell me a bucket of salt because his dry good mark ups were minimal at the time. if anyone could debuke or confirm this info it would be appreciated.

I'm not sure about hardened salt in a bucket but, most minerals/trace elements will have been used up/dissolved before the water has evaporated and turned back into a solid.
