Maybe, but likewise there would be less room for error in accidentally lowering salinity... Actually significantly less. if 1.0264 is normal. 1.022 is already .0044 low. .0044 high would be 1.308. So, natural salinity gives you the most leeway in both directions.

That's not nearly as bad as accidentally raising it IME

Hhow exactly would you reach this conclusion? Osmotic pressure is osmotic pressure, it doesn't matter which way the pressure is going. I don't see how high salinity or low salinity is any different.

Same here, let it evaporate them add salt water, just watch you do not add to much.

Since I have gone both way from my experience's I agree with Peredhil. It took everything allot longer to recover when my wife raised the salinity to 1.32, than it did when I dropped it to 1.018

But do disagree with your statement that "Most LFS keep their livestock in 1.022 water" Fish maybe but not corals. at least not the ones that I go to around here. Their coral tanks are kept at the same level I keep my tank at, 1.026

I would let it evaporate then top-off with salt water at the correct salinity level. I like to keep mine at 1.026.

Sorry Predhil I missed the "IME". Everyone is certainly entitled to their own experience LOL. There may be a number of reasons you experienced this, however, IMO there is no biological plausible explanation that would suggest this should be stated as a general rule.

through mistakes really. ideally your SG never budges.

I once ended up replacing 10% SW with FW by accident (forgot to turn off ATO during WC). Number just plummeted. Nothing seemed to care. I spent a week raising it back.

Due to Mg overdose, I once caused my SG to jump up. By a smaller margin than when it dropped. I almost lost a few pieces due to that and did lose several crabs.

Most LFS have fish and not corals from what I've seen. OP did not specify reef or FO.

I'll go with experience over limited scientific explanations involving life. There's plenty out there can't be explained yet.

SG impacts other things too; like how much Oxygen is able to be dissolved in the water. A sudden increase in SG is going to reduce O levels. I would expect that to have an impact on life.

I'm not saying that is the or even the only biological explanations.

What happens though when there are differences in peoples experience? I know I've certainly messed up my salinity many times, probably more than I can count. I haven't seen any more or less negative effect when raising than lowering. So, is your experience better than mine?

Science certainly can't explain everything, but neither can experience. In the end both sources are important to us hobbyists. When there is a conflict the only way to tease out the truth is to do an experiment, or to look to those who have already done similar experiments.

That's philosophy I guess though. I'm sure there are people who think their experience trumps all and people who think science trumps all... I think both are wrong.
