I made a batch of saltwater last night using Instant Ocean. Using a power head to mix overnight, I looked at the mix this morning and its cloudy and milky. I only add a small amount of marine buffer and the salinity is right at 1.024 - 1.025. Can i still use this batch or is it not wise to do so? whats going on or what's wrong? thanks in advance.

you would think the salt would be fully dissolved by now. i guess the best thing to do is give it more time. i would think if added as is, your display would be all cloudy too. what is the buffer supposed to do?

Ive heard that adding water to the salt, as opposed to adding salt to the water can make it cloudy. For some reason the salt doesn't fully dissolve if you just pour the water onto a pile of salt. I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure Ive heard this before, although Ive never actually experienced it myself.

I had the can filling and added the pump for agitation before adding the salt. Should I expect this to clear up in the next couple of days? I dont need to do my water change until this weekend so i have time.

i would expect it to. mine just with manually stirring , it becomes uncloudy withn a day. is this the 1st time its happened? maybe has something to do with the buffer? raised the ph too high? those are pure guesses on my behalf.

If the mix doesn't clear up I prob wouldn't use it. Most salt mixes contain buffers so I think addidng the additional buffer is unnecessary the buffer you have would be used of the system loses pH in between water changes

Do all the tests just like it was already in your tank.

    Ca
    Alk
    Mg
    pH

That will tell you in a hurry whether or not to use the water. A few years ago, there were several large batches of IO that caused major problems in peoples tanks and Aquarium System's gave them replacement bags of salt.

I experienced the same thing when I added buffer to my salt mix. At first I thought I was adding to much?

I had 4 gallons of ro/di put in power head and started it. I then added my salt mix and let it clear. After that I added 2 tablespoon of ph buffer and bam, it got cloudy. I talked to some people and they said desolve the buffer in a glass of water first. So I did the exact same thing and tried it disolved, same crap. So I stopped using the ph buffer...

It doesn't help to figure your problem out but it let's you know your not alone. However I seem to have these crazy problems that nobody can figure out,lol... Jeff
