I don't get his reasoning either. Is it an environmental thing? Ours has a holding tank and only makes more water if the tank empties. It has saved us a lot of money instead of buying drinking water at the store and it fills the tank. Seawater is better, but I do not know about the type you buy. I do not know where it is collected because if it is collected from a harbor or beach it will not be good for an Aquarium.

And I should have just said that in the beginning

So now what do you think ro water or sea water.

So thinking about what you said sea water might be hard to find where they take it from a good place if you know what I mean

even after you tell him that it'll cost him less than $1 month in wasted water?

Gonna save you TONS of money over buying sea water, so i guess my answer is store RO water unless you dont mind the cost of the seawater

UGG, not really! RODI is better, but RO is better than tap

You need to try and convince him, his logic is false. Do y'all drink or cook with tap?

Cosmo, You reminded me of my grandma she says Ugg every 10 seconds or at least every time she moves. lol

What I am saying is, I do not know if the companies that sell bottled sea water take the time to get in a boat, drive a distance off the coast, collect, and bring it back. It would be much easier for them to siphon it off from a dock which would be in some kind of protected water, which is too dirty for reef life. It's probably fine, but I do question it.....

Most likely the locations they collect their water from are pre tested for contaminants before they take the time to box it up. That being said, they most likely factor the test kits into their price. If you have any question about the quality of the water you buy, then you're better off mixing it yourself. Like said before, if you cant make your own RODI, then buying it from the LFS would be second best, and if that's difficult, yes, RO is better than straight tap, being you've already identified that your city puts additives into your drinking water. Some claim that their tap water is fine, mine on the other hand is horrible. I actually could smell that they put too much chlorine in the system last month, and I couldn't drink the water until just a few days ago.

I've used it and loved it

Yes, I've used the Petco real ocean water with great results in one of my former tanks. The cost is not that far from bottled RO/DI alone, then one needs to add the cost of salt when mixing their own. A move put me too far from Petco, but now there's a new one close by and I've been planning to switch back.

With real ocean water, you get the exact same chemistry that your pets have evolved with, some for many millions of years. Man-made salt mixes may suffice, but they will never compare with nature.

You can go to Catalina Water Company's website for collection and filtration info on Petco's real ocean water. :)
