Salt water in a box. good or bad?

    Do you have a reliable phosphate / nitrate test? If so, it would be very interesting to see results of those tests and of the calcium, alkalinity and magnesium levels.

    Actually, yes it was:

    The Petco real ocean water is filtered, skimmed, and uv sterilized. There's nothing in it to die or decay. Furthermore, as far as nsw is concerned, I collected my own when I lived in Florida with no issues at all. It went straight from Sebastian Inlet to my tank.

    The new local Petco now has it, and my first wc is prepping as I type...

    Just a couple of notes:

    1) You cannot add fish immediately just because you're using nsw. The bio-filter is not free-swimming; it colonizes on submerged surfaces. IOW, your tank will still need to be cycled.

    2) As a precaution, any water to be added to my tank gets aerated for several hours prior to use. That which is to be used for WCs also gets heated to tank temp.
