its very interesting when they start to test different variety of salts and the reactions they have on our tank inhabitants. i dont think that anyone will ever have an exact duplicat on natural sea water since it is different depending on where you go. some places will have more run off, more acid rain and so on. this will make a effect on different metals and elements in that area of water. with this ever changing they can get close with synthetic sea salts but will never get it perfect. if you ever take notice brands of salts are advertised different ways for certain purposes. as far as for spawning ive seen IO and Kent in advertisements for the best for fish, Reef crystals as the better salt for corals (more calcium and trace elements), Red sea as better for corals and inverts because of it being a denser salt. so they are being made differently and can have certain effects on critters that others wont.

the study was spacific towards the urchin yes, but i would compare this to fresh water studys that they do. for streams and creeks they study the bugs, they determine the changes in water quality and health for the rest of the inhabitants. they are the best tool to notice if its improving or declining. maby the urchin is like the fresh water bug, its a good source to see the effects on things whether good, bad, or indifferent.
