Hey guys, I was just wondering if a niger triggerfish could coexist with anthias in a FOWLR aquarium. I am setting up a 75 gallon aquarium and am trying to come up with a list of possible fish to house. I like the triggerfish personality and the niger seems the prettiest less aggresive of them all. I want to house

    1 yellow tang

    3 blue yellowtail damsel

    flame angel

2 butterflyfish (the easy to care ones)

Blue spotted puffer... and possibly the anthias and niger. would this work? And all my filter equipment and skimmer is rated for 100-150 gallon aquariums.

My concern is with the difference in temperament as well as size of the selected species. Butterflies don't fare well with aggressive species and may be harassed to death by the puffer and/or trigger. The trigger may also make a meal of the damsels when it matures.

Anthias tend to be very shy so don't add the trigger until they are adjusted.

Also, I might recommend a Blue Throat instead of a Niger. The Niger isn't the most agressive out there, but I've found Blue Throats to be a little safer and I like the color a whole heck of a lot more. I had a pair of Blue Throats in my short-lived 185 and they didn't bother anyone other than themselves (actually just the male - we called him Ike Turner for the way he beat up on the female).

Is say no to all 3 butterfly/tangs, they have similar shapes and colors, that'd cause lots of fighting. I don't think the puffer can even go in a tank less than 100g.

Okay thanks guys, but what would you guys suggest then. I dont really need the damselfish, I just like the idea of have multiples of the same kind and damsels happen to be aggresive to hang with the triggerfish. Plus, the niger or even the blue throat are not that aggresive. The blue spotted puffer is actually pretty small for a puffer growing only 5 inches and its pretty docile. My biggest concern was the anthias and niger trigger. I might end up getting the blue throat because its docile but the niger has way more personality and active. I pretty much want active fish that swim all over the tank (hence the puffer, trigger, and tang). I know healthy fish mean active fish, but i mean fish fun to watch swim not like clownfish who stay in an anemone all day or goby fish. I want active interesting fish. Any suggestions guys, or a leat to choose from for a 75 gallon FOWLR tank.

Butterflies, anthias and pigmy angels should all be fine together; there are plenty that are suitable for a 75g tank and they're all quite active. If you're looking for a school of peaceful, active fish to go with them, I'd recommend the green or blue chromis.

My gf had a black trigger with a sailfin and yellow tang. But it was added last, and as a super small juvenile. After a year once it got big, it started to pick on all the fish in the tank. Also, keeping multiple damsels is easy when they are small, but once they start to mature they will fight with each other. Another thing to note, it will be impossible to keep a CUC with a trigger and a puffer

I agree, these boys are going to have lunch on you. Have you looked at maybe a Pink Tail Trigger?
