Thank you for this information, I need to add not remove some sand, as when I had the cyano I removed quite a bit. At that time I didn't know to wash the old sand, so my sand bed is too low. I'm thinking a child's small sand shovel would work to move or remove sand.

That depends on how deep your sand bed is?

My current CC sandbed is about 2" deep. From what I've read in the forums, it doesn't sound like I've got a particularly deep sandbed. I should probably also mention that the bed's about 3 years old.

This tank's been my baby for 3 years, when do I stop feeling like a newbie? ;)

    Never!

If you remove your crushed coral gradually and run a skimmer and carbon 24/7, you shouldn't have too big of a spike in water parameters.

Thanks! I plan to begin the project this weekend, my fish are on notice that a remodel is upcoming!

I'm thinking a total of 50-60lbs of the Caribsea Arag-Alive Fiji Pink for the entire project for my 55g tank, sound reasonable?

Not sure how deep of a sandbed that would create but I like to put down no more than an inch of sand in my tanks.

Ok.....this was pure marketing genius. Caribsea had Aragamight which wasn't selling well and aragamilk which wasn't selling well. They combined them into the same bottle, came up with the name Purple Up, added 1 cent worth of Iodine, increased the price and they rid themselves of excess inventory. ;D

I just find it all to funny , People wash out the dust that they then buy to feed coralline growth . I developed a formula for Purple up its just like it looks and performance and effects on coralline 1.50 for 16oz the most expensive ingredient is the glycerin for thickness water works just as well . But many feel it needed to be thicker they sell the hell out of it for 12.95 a 16ox bottle at a LFS .. The P/U next o it for 27.95 just sets there now..

But I think the real marketing genius is now they sell a sand that requires no rinsing :) for a little more money and then take the free dust that they robed from the bag and make more purple up or dry and powder it in to Aragamite :) and that is way overly priced.. I see people rinsing their sand I just ask them can I have the waste when you are done ? Magic reef dust was what Leroy at Garf called it that was a damn fine product a few dollars for a several pounds .. best product of this nature I ever say , Until a sponsor considered it a source of competition then they stopped selling it .

Then there is the agra live LOL just another way to bust someone for wet sand by the pound. The consumer is dumb enough to pay for it ? then have at it I wish I had thought of it first .. LOL wet sand by the pound.. I've used it as a sample 3 bags of it never saw any advantages one way or the other . I missed my dust :) I'd rather have had the dust.

Sounds like some marketing fun going on there with the sand products! Anything for a few extra bucks I suppose...

So I'm wondering, since I'm removing only half of the existing CC sandbed at a time, can I go with the less expensive CaribSea Dry Aragonite vs the live sand? Will critters from the untouched side move over and setup shop? Then if I wait say 2 weeks before doing the other half, is that enough time for the first 'sand add' to be able to 'seed' the new sand?

It sounds like in Marty's project in this post that he added LS, wanted to be sure or not if that was mandatory.

    Thanks!

To answer all of your questions. Absolutely! Sorry for not mentioning that earlier!
