My sand bed is only like two inches deep in the main tank about 4 to 5 inches in the refugium.

Different depths for different types of sand.

For a "true" DSB, 4-6 inches is recommended of medium grade arag type sand.

A finer "oolitic" sand can have an effect at 1-2" inches.

Personally, I have a 1 inch oolitic sand bed for asthetic purposes only. My filtration will be from the refugium.

Just a question. It is my understanding that if your sand bed is not deep enough to do its job converting the nitrates then all the stuff that falls in your sand will stay there and accumulate and cause problems. With a 1 inch bed dont you have to vacume it or something to remove the wastes?

    Just wondering

I have one inch oolitic sand in the display tank. I stir it frequently;D

I also have 4 inch DSB in my fuge, which I do not mess with at all.

I have zero nitrates at this time.:)

Birdlady has the right idea. Stirring your oolitic sand bed...manually or with sand sifting critters...keeps it functioning.

Of course, siphoning large amounts of detritus is always beneficial.
