Everyone.....I'm close to a newb at this, but I have a 300 gallon tank and am making it a FOWLR. I like lots of fish in my tank, and the LR should give it a some what realistic look (along with all the good things the bacteria does for the tank) and am not into all the things that sift through the sand unless they are needed. I do like starfish but realize they require a lot to eat but I think with 300 - 450# of LR there should be enough growth for 1 or 2 to eat.

Anyways, my question is.....after reading all the info on BB, SSB and DSB, I can honestly say...I'm lost! I do want sand on the bottom of my tank for looks, so do I want to go with a SSB or a DSB. Again, this is a FOWLR, I will have a large protein skimmer and a wet/dry filter.

    Please help a newb.....thanks!

    Sorry for rambling.....

You be better off getting base rock L.R will do nothing more especially in a F/O and they rock will become alive in a few weeks as it cycles For sand I'd get this
White Playsand for Sandbox - Order Play Sand Here Its simply a aragonite children's play sand from the Bahamas

it depends of you will be using a DSB or not. For a dsb you will want 4-6 inches but for a reg SB 2-3 is sufficient

You can do a 1 to 2 inch sand bed for your application depending on how you want things to look. 70lbs of sand should cover 1728 sq inches 1 inch deep.
