sand from beach

    is getting sand from the beach a bad thing ive never heard of any one using it.i know theres probably gonna be some hitch hikers but i dont think sand from the shore would have to many if anyone can give me an opinion please

    only the possibility of some hitchikers. Also there is usually a higher content of dieoff so if you are putting it in a new tank then it might help you cycle

    Not a good idea, you have no idea what the sand has been exposed to.

    For the amount of money must people invest in their SW systems, new sand is a small price to pay to insure that it will not harm the system now or later down the road. IMHO

    +2, you have aerial polution and aquatic polution in the sand and who knows what else dumped in by humans and other animals.

    Just get play sand and rinse it in parts in a bucket until the water you dump out is clear. It's around $3 for 50 pounds at lowe's.

    +3. Just buy sand! It's not expensive compared to all the other stuff you'll be buying. Plus, unless you have a permit, you shouldn't be taking things from nature.
