I just picked up a half bucket of sand from my old 125 and have been considering using it on my new 25 gallon setup that currently is barebottom. I have 2 small tanks setup from the one larger and the one with sand has a WAY better PH than the one without. The sand has been in stagnant water for around a week now and I was wondering how I should be preparing it to transfer it to the new tank.

All of my livestock is at the LFS until I get everything squared away so no real risk there, but I would like to start adding back stuff sometime next week. what would be the best way to prep the old sand to get it into my new tank?

    Thanks!

I would carefully scoop it out with a cupand carefully drop it into the new tank. Try not to disturb it too much. I would wet skim to get any free floating crud out as well.

rinse it out really good then spread it out on a tarp in the sun and let it dry out completely, rinse again in RO water and add it to the tank.

I just wound up pulling out all my rock and adding sand straight from the old tank. This morning I have like .25 ammonia, my PH is WAY better at 8.2 and no nitrite yet. I have a large water change ready to go and am thinking about using a gravel-vac to siphon out some of the nastyness from the old tank.
