I was in petsmart and seen they had agronite (spelling) sand for pretty cheap.
Can i buy this sand and buy a small bag of live sand to "seed" the sand?

    Live sand is expensive.

    Thanks

IMO, live sand in a bag is a false claim... that stuff has been in a bag shipped around the country and been sitting on a store shelf... waste of money IMO.

Buying "dead" and seeding with "live" is the way to go IMO. if you are putting in any Live Rock, you don't even need to seed it... the LR will.

You only need a little bit of LR. The rest can be base rock (equivalent of "dead sand")

I used the PetSmart argonite sand for my new mantis tank (with LR from my refugium and water from my 46G tank). Be sure to look at the packages - they have a coarser sand and another that's more like "sugar" - I would stay away from the finer grains of sand unless you want a perpetual sandstorm!

I used to believe that the agra-alive was a waste. However, I did end up getting some for my newest setup. It was full of stuff that I have never seen in "live sand" before. Snails, worms, and some other stuff I couldn't even identify.

I would try to use mostly dead sand then a bag of live sand. Just try to find the freshest bag you can. Some are marked with a date on the back.
