I wanted to place sand in my new tank but was not sure how this is done. I came up with this idea and it worked fantastic. I did my 85 gallon tank in about 20 minutes and little clouding. The funnel let me put the sand down just where I wanted. You do need a stick handy to poke the sand if it gets clogged but actually works very well. Has any one done it this way before?

Obviously I do not know how to post a picture in my thread but the link works.

I should also mention the water is from the water used to cure the rock. It measures zero on everything with a Ph 8.3

LOL that is probably the best DIY I've seen in a long time! Where were you when I dumped the sand in? It settled after a few days, but your way looks a lot better! karma for the simple diy!

Thanks i am going to transfer some sand over in a day or two and was thinking something like this.

I have a question, i have an empty 30lbs of sand in a salt water tank that had fish and now has been sitting for 3 months. Would it be bad to transfer to my big tank or should it be fine?

What a great idea! I have been wondering how you would add sand to a tank if you needed it--now I know.

Thanks All. Glad I made someones task a little easier. I am going to make a nice clean one perhaps with a clear acrylic tube and the funnel glued on rather than duct tape. I might also try a collapsable unit for different depths and storage. A vacuum cleaner tube and angled end would also be a nice addition - Ah, who has enough time?

Wow! I can't believe it. We are such geniuses. LOL I did the same thing with one difference. I put a string (plastic from the weed whacker) through the tube with a small flat circular piece of plastic tied to the end to serve as a cover to keep the sand in until I put the tube where I wanted it. Then I loosened the string for the sand to come out. It did work. Eventually the water did get cloudy, but I was able to see to know where I wanted it b4 it was too cloudy.
