I usually keep my sump 1/2 full, but it depends on how much your sump can hold if it back drains. I would fill it 1/2 way then let it back drain to see how much the sump can handle before it either overflows or the return spout in the 55g loses suction. I use a swing check valve to prevent back flow.

Okay, 1/2 full sounds good and safe to start and then test from there.
I was planning on drilling a few holes in the return PVC in order to cause the it to lose suction, hopefully that will get it done.

What do you think about the Mag 5, brackets or not? If so, do they make something that will hold it down properly or are we talking retro? I just don't want it to be noisy or possibly causing damage to the sump tank.

You could let gravity hold it down, I do ;)
Sometimes they get to vibrating, a small piece of rubber underneath it will quiet that down. I haven't seen a bracket set up, but that doesn't mean someone hasn't made one or someone doesn't sell one :)

Same here. My return pump just sits in the sump and I've never had any trouble.

I'm all in favor of upgrading the pump on my AquaC from a MaxiJet 1200 but I have not heard good things about the RIO pumps. Does anyone use another pump with the AquaC skimmer that would be more powerful than the MaxiJet?
