    sand looking yellow in an area are these diatoms?

    Hard to tell with out pics. It could be diatoms, or it could be detritus settling due to lack of flow.

    Is your tank a newly set up? Odds are if you have just set it up, you are experience a diatom bloom, most new tanks go through this as there is an abundance of silicate in the tank.

    If you can post some pictures ,that will definatley help to identify

    Just a tiny bit of algae. Little more flow will clean that up in less than 5 minutes!
