when i first started my tank i was told that crushed coral was the best thing to get, a year later my cc looks very bad and i was wondering if i could go out buy some sand and just put it on top of my cc. i don't want to change all the cc for sand just put half an inch or so on top of it. the cc is about 2 inches now and tanking the rocks out of the tank is not a possibility. so if i can put sand on top
how much and how do i do it thanks.

heres a pictures if it helps

To be honest, all that's going to happen is the small grained sand will fall to the bottom of the tank and the crushed coral will sift through. In other words it wil look exactly the same, only with a layer of sand underneath it.

Yep, swagger hit it right on the head.
You could always switch out the substrate. Its some work, but it might be well worth it. Do a search here, there are a few threads detailing on how to do it.

I would definitely add sand over the CC, and slowly removes the CC as it rises. Like over several weeks.

Wouldn't it be easier to just remove the CC and replace with sand rather than cover the CC and pick it out little by little?

I agree with Swagger on this one. Although it would require some work, in the long run, it will be easier to just replace the CC now.

Maybe, but you risk killing all your fish, and some corals.

Trust me, I have done that.

Replace a portion at a time. Do the left 3rd and then wait a week or so and monitor your parameters. Then when all looks good go for the next 3rd until you are done.

That's what I meant. Not take out the whole thing at once, but replace it section by section.

Horkn-How would it risk killing the fish? (Not that I don't believe you, I do. I've just never heard of that and I'd like to learn more.)
