I need a definite answer once and for all. Can you put a sand sifting star fish in a DSB? I am setting up a 46 bow and i have 120 pounds of live sand for it. I have heard varying theories on wether or not you can have sand sifting star fish, if any one has any real reasons please let me know. BTY I have a 5 gallon HOB fuge which will help my pod population, so the stars would not be able to get to them.

120 #'s ? Thats a ddsb lol. I have 90 in my 46 and it's about 4"-6" deep. If I had known better when starting out I would have gone with a remote dsb.
IMO the star isn't going to bury deep enough to cause any problems though.

Sand sifting stars will decimate a DSB. I have 330 lbs of Southdown sand in a 60" 100G reef andafter about 1.5 years added a star. Within months there was not a single spaghetti worm, mini brittle star or any other live critter left in the sand. I took him back to the store andspent the next 6 months bumming cups of live sand from fellow reef club members and adding bottles of ocean pods and reef stew to get it all back. Its still not where it once was after 4 more years.
Biggest mistake of my reefing career by far. I was warned by many friends and reef forums but though I knew better, boy was I wrong and I'm not afraid to admit it. Stoopid!

Agree. SSS will eat everything it can quite voraciously and then slowly starve to death over a year and a half or so. Happened to us not too long ago.
