I recently made as slight upgrade from a 12 gal. To a 30 gal. I have moved all rock and inhabitants to my 30. 20 lbs. Of live sand is still in my 12, my questions is is it safe to transfer the sand into my 30 if the readings in my 12 are a little high in the ammo and nitrite dept?

no not worth the trouble if u can just buy new sand because stirring old sand can be bad releasing nitrogen in the water maybe just scoop a cup off the top and add dry sand with the cup of ur sand to the new tank

I'm with Bio, use new sand, this will give you a chance to change the type or color if you want.

What if I just move the sand in the old tank so it releases the nitrogen into the water perform maybe a 50% water change....my thing is I paid for it and if possible would want it in my new tank. I don't care much about the color I just want a halfway decent sand bed without having to shell out another $30 for it. If it is possible in my situation I will appreciate any advice to get the sand in my 30 gal. Thanx!

I'd buy new sand if I had the option.

I am removing crushed coral from my 55 as I type (taking a break so debri can settle) so I can replace with sand and I stirred up alot of nasty stuff and the water dripping from my cc didn't look good either.

The option I forgot about is that you could rinse alittle at a time in a bucket until the cloudyness was gone but I'd save a cup before you rinse to seed your new tank.

theres always the option of going bare bottom. I didn't think much of the idea at first, but after seeing pics of tanks with coraline covered glass for a substrate I was impressed.

Rinse it very well, or buy new sand. If you just transfer it, you will have a major drawn out cycle.

I have transfered quite a few of my tanks and never had a problem. I upgraded 3 times in the last few years and I still have the same sand that I started out with in my 12 gallon JBJ. I was just careful and added the old sand to the bottom of the tank and tried not to stir it up too much. After I get it all in and let it settle I Stir the sand bed once a week. Why would you rinse the sand out? If you rinsed it out you'd be killing/rinsing out all of the life in it that we all work so hard to get. Where do you think live sand comes from? If your buying it off of ebay your more than likely getting sand that somebody has in their tank. If you buy new dried sand you will have to cycle that. Your choice on this one.

Hey there. I did a exact same upgrade as you. From eclipse12 to biocube 29. 1 gallon off maybe =p

Anyway, I moved everything in the 12 gallon tank to 29 gallon tank. Sand, rock, fish, crab, etc etc. I only had eclipse set up for around 3 weeks. I added extra 15lb of rock, and 10lb of sand. It has been over a month now since I had my biocube setup. Its too early to tell right now but nothing died yet.
