If you decide to use a mud ? I always just use simple old cheap Ga. Clay Cat litter the kozycat stuff from wall mart works great its in a orange bag and is like 3.00 for a 25 lb bag no nothing for orders control or anything just simple old dry Ga. Gray alkaline clay, magical mud that has not had water added yet. Of you can buy the mud for big $$$$ an get nothing more from it..Only thing magic about that mud is the way it seems to magical separate one from their money

Yes in the refugium.. The cat litter does very well I is also the best way to build a DSB as well as a plenum system I found out long ago that laying down a couple of inches of the dry litter then capping it with different grades of top cover sand that they both ran longer with less problems . And I think when we where doing that that some got the idea to just sell magic mud .. And ran with it..
Read the fine print on a bag of that magic mud that will tell you the mud is a total provider for a stable water parameters But in the fine print it says to replenish the elements or mud every so often..as it will become exhausted.

A few here applied it with great sucuess and have had no issues . And said they would and will use it again.. Been using it for many yrs and never a problem.. Mud is Mud ..If it comes from the correct region.
