scuba isn't dangerous until it's dangerous.. the issue is that in most cases you don't determine when it's going to become dangerous or when you will encounter a dangerous situation. It's much better to be over prepared than under. If you don't know what you are doing with, say, a reef tank and something bad happens you will lose money.. if you don't know what you are doing with scuba and something unexpected happens it can cost you your life.

90%+ of dives go great. But when they don't you need to feel comfortable enough to know how to handle it and a crash course doesn't do that.

Also, who wants to lose a day on there honeymoon to sit in a pool learning to dive! Spend it already diving!

Like I said before I know quite a few people who have died diving. I do understand if things go wrong it can be fatal. I do not think they will be bringing first time divers to high current, deep areas. I myself do not believe in the short courses as you need to be comfortable before you dive. Even if you are not comfortable with a brownie you should not do it.

Thank you everyone for the stories and advice. I Gould have noted I have been snubba, so I'm familiar w the regulator, the weights and everything. Just not the tank on back aspect. My fiancé will not do it, she turned down the snubba let alone scuba. So it will just be me. The closest place for me at home is 2 hours away and is 600 for the course. I don't live anywhere close where I would scuba a lot so the everytime thing is not an issue for me. The resort said its about a 3 hour course then pool time. Following day they go out to shallow reef, all dives no matter if certified or not are instructor lead. 1 instructor to every 4 people. If I did it local I'm talking the money plus the 4 hour round trip I would need to take for every class and dive would be a lot. I have snorkeled everywhere but w the free scuba at the resort I wanted to take advantage of it.

I'm the first to speak up about feeling comfortable, if I do not feel comfortable during the practice tries I will for sure not risk it.

You'll be fine, given your description I would just go ahead and take the crash course and have some fun with it. Just pay attention and keep breathing no matter what. (especially important as you move up and down in the water column)

Agreed! You seem well in the know and she should be able to snorkel when you dive. Like grim says, just BREATHE! It may be in your best interest to be a little overweight on the belt or BC, better to be a little heavier then to be too light and continually drifting to the surface. Oh, and despite everything I, and the others have been naysaying, Diving is UNBELIEVABLE!!!!! Enjoy yourself and good luck in the future with your new bride!

Thank you everyone, thats why I turn to 3reef. It's not till may 2014 but I still can't wait. Plus we get there 4 days prior to wedding so I have some time to kill. If the training is shotty I'll just snorkel. If I have anymore questions along the way I'll be sure to speak up.

It is a dry heat, yeah right !
I am a firm believer that if someone does not want to dive you should not pressure them to, but it really is too bad your girl is not into it.

Most people that feel comfortable in the water doing activities like snorkeling have little problems making the transition to diving.

Perhaps expose her to some good scuba documentaries and see if she show an interest.

Diving is not for everyone, but it is a fantastic sport, just never ever panic, cool head at all times and a qualified dive buddy.
