sandbed releasing air bubbles

    my 3 inch sandbed is releasing air bubble up the surface. Is this bad or good? What is going on?

    mine started doing the same thing a few months ago..from what i understand..it means that your sand bed is "working"..i have also heard that the bubbles are toxic..i like to think that it means my sand bed is working!

    I'm sure someone else can tell you more!

    I too would like to think that this is normal and not something that would harm any of my coral and fishes..

    they could be nitrogen bubbles if from anerobic zones.

    It's nitrogen.

    To break down ammonia and nitrite bacteria need oxygen. Bacteria that break down nitrate to nitrogen hate oxygen. In the bottom of your sand bed there is no oxygen. Anoxic bacteria live there and break nitrate down to nitrogen gas.

    It's a good thing. It's why you want a sand bed.

    Dont stir up your sand to release all those bubbles at once!!!!--If you dont like the look of them, you can gently move the sand and release them a little here and there. Not all at once.
