Wondering what other people are using for there plumbing, BRS recommends sch. 80 which is hard to find at the local hardware store. Can get sch. 40 but would like to use BRS sch. 80 unions with sch. 40 PVC pipe are they compatible, same outside diameter?

The outside diameter is the same. Just the wall thickness is different.

    Thanks

What is the common most people are using does it make any differance, 40 or 80?
I'm plumbing for a 90 gallon reef tank, the sump will be in the basement below the tank about a 10 foot uplift.

Sch 40 will handle anything we can throw at it. Suprises me BRS says 80. that's pretty heavy duty for our needs.

sch 40 is good upto 150 psi. way past the pressure we will ever use. sch 80 is for high corrosive and high pressure .

Exactly what the others have said. 40 is plenty, and it is compatible with sch 40 fittings, sch 80 fittings, and also dwv fittings.

    40 and 80 are 100% compatible.

The reason that BRS recommends 80, is that the components they have chosen are heavy duty and very good quality. A schedule 80 bulkhead is a much higher quality than a 40 bulkhead. Will the 40 work and never fail, most likely, but some people choose to limit this chance.

I personally, will be using all schedule 80 bulkheads and valves on my current build.
