I am looking for something that will stay small, but the firefish are nice and ive heard before that some damsels will school, such as neon damselfish + they stay to 2.5", which is nice.

I started with a 75g and moved up to a 120g...the fire fish and chromis do not get very big and five of one of these or three of each would likely work out just fine in a 55g...you will need a top of some time if you chose the fire fish as they do jump....more so when being chased...

In the wild firefish form pairs so you may find once they get old enough and pair off that one will get harassed assuming you have a male and female, otherwise only the dominant one may stay alive. Nothing is written in stone but just something to be aware of.

Chromis and damsels oftentimes will tend to pick each other off too over time, do some searches and you'll find quite a few instances here on 3reef of this happening.

Do you have schools of fish? if so, what kind(s)? How large is your aquarium?

Just as a note of caution for the firefish, I have 2 in a 90 and for over a year they got along great, now that they are mature the fighting has started, one is getting beat up pretty bad and I am doing my best to get it out before I lose it. I have heard that scissortails get along better - not sure though, but yeah - firefish are gorgeous.

I don't have any shoals (schooling is a specific type of shoal that we won't ever see in our tanks), I am working on a harem of McCoskers flasher wrasses and a harem of Lubbock's fairy wrasses though. They don't group up together in a shoal, but you get some interesting behavior between the males/females that I like better.

If I had a larger tank I would consider a group of Apogon cardinals but I think they take up too much bioload for my tank, I'd rather have more movement and color from wrasses.

    I have a 75g tank for them.

Would this be less of a problem if I got them already full grown or almost fully matured?
