Hi, so I am very new to this hobby and have just began cycling my tank. I chose to drop in three old, but still raw oysters. Oddly (creepily!) enough, there are hitchhikers on the shells! (And I was going to eat those!)

I believe the first group to be worms, but here is a photo to be certain:

Are these a "feather duster worm" and a "spaghetti worm" on the top crest? Also there seems to be a (presumably dead) clam-ish thing hanging on.

I have no idea on the second! I though this was a barnacle or something... until I started to notice that it moves when I stand over it. I tried to capture a video with my camera, but it wouldn't focus on the thing. It did get a good picture though. The "monster" will open its "mouth"(??) and I once saw something white slip out of its mouth. It also flinches by jerking back into its hole... It's a tad creepy! :)

It's that "thing" living in the barnacle-like hole... looks like half a beak.

    Thank you! :)

    I see barnacles.

That appears to be a clam as well, but is it alive?

I see some feather-dustery things in the first picture as well as the barnacles. What do you expect from the ocean? :)

I think the feather-dustery things are part of the barnacles. The thing with the mouth that lives in the barnacle cone is also a barnacle :)

The other bivalve attached is a mussel, probably Ischadium recurvum.

Ischadium recurvum (Rafinesque, 1820) Hooked Mussel

    Cheers,

    Don
