I presently use Petco Premium Salt for my FOWLR tank. I have been having trouble with my parameters. My nitrates seem to be always at 20 ppm. My friend tells me that Petco brand sea salt is made by a subsidiary of Kent that goes by the name of Aquatic Gardens (previously Catalina).

Can anyone offer any advice or insight concerning this?

I don't know anything about the Petco salt, but I would pay a little more money and go with Instant Ocean at least. What all do you have in your tank?

Is petco brand salt cheaper than Instant ocean. Instant ocean is probably the biggest producer of aquarium salt in the US. I was unaware that anyone could beat their price.

First, are you using RO/DI water? If not, then that's most likely your problem. If so, then test a freshly-mixed batch. If nitrate is zero, then the problem is your bio-load and maintenance schedule, not the salt.

FWIW, 20ppm is not really that bad for a FOWLR.
