Well, I guess that's one way to introduce yourself to a new forum...

As for the seaclown, count yourself lucky- you got that one in a million.

I think he is promoting the skimmer. Could be worse.

I actually haven't seen a thread on a SeaClone in quite a while lol. Glad you had a good experience, have you done any mods to it?

My first skimmer, bought it at Smart Mart (aka Pet smart). Mine work good for about 13 months or so. Then it just stopped skimming, I cleaned and cleaned changed tubing ect. So after all of that I realized I paid $99 for a mj1200. Hmmm wait for it "SUCKER"!

    SeaClone 100, it really works!

I just joined this forum and I'm new to the hobby of saltwater fish. I'm responding to all of the negative posts about the Seaclone 100. I recently purchased one before reading all the bad press about this skimmer. Well, after four days of fiddling with it and having no results. I decided to change the air valve after watching a you tube video on seaclone modifications. As soon as I changed the valve, within minutes, it started to make froth. I could not believe my eyes. This thing actually works!! By changing the little air valve it makes such a big difference. And I would also like to mention that the micro bubbles that were filling half tank before, are now very subtle. Amazing!!! I'll just keep my fingers crossed and see how long this lasts. LOL

Well let me add to the negative posts about them then, LOL!

I will say in years past I have owned a couple of these skimmers and done virtually every mod to them that has been thought up. Can they be "made" to work? Yes. Can they be run with any real efficiently? Not IMO.

The problem with the SeaClone is the design is flawed. Because of the "overflow/spillway" design the only way to adjust the unit is by increasing or decreasing the amount of air at the intake. In order to raise the water level to provide a wetter foam you have to decrease the amount of air...this leads to less foam production...in order to increase foam production you have to increase the amount of air entering the unit...more air means the water level will drop so less foam reaches the collection cup...each of these air adjustments has a counterproductive effect because of the direct effect it has on the water level. In the end to be at all successful in foam production you have to find a very fine live between water level and air intake...and even then the amount of skimmate produced is fairly dismal. Even the best "tuned" SeaClone I have seen produced in a week maybe what a "decent" skimmer could do in a day...and required fairly constant tinkering to maintain said production. If compared to something like the lowest end entry level Reef Octopus skimmer, which only costs a few dollars more, the difference is night and day.

So in summary, can you make a SeaClone produce foam? Sure with some tinkering you can get some skimmate. Some would argue that any skimmate is better than nothing. Personally I think most people who own these units are fairly new to the hobby and have never owned a "real" skimmer to compare them too. Consider that most new folks over stock and over feed and I think they are easily lulled into a false sense that the small amount of skimmate they are seeing is doing more good that it really is.

That's just my personal opinion and observation from first hand experience with many different skimmers, including the SeaClone, and almost 30 years in the hobby. If you're happy with your SeaClone, far be it from me to tell you differently, LOL!

The cost of seaclone is roughly around 80 to 100 depending on where you buy it. (new that is). ...for like 20 bucks more you could get a skimmer that actually works like a Eshopps or something. just an example.
