When I set up my 40 breeder, I went with Carib sea Seafloor special grade for the DT and Carib Sea crushed coral for my fuge (fuge has a DSB). Did I screw up? Will I have any issues with the different substrates? I thought the crushed coral DSB would trap more harmful materials. The tank has been running for two months with 3 peices of stacked LR. It's already bubbling up an looks like it's working well.

    Thanks.

I dont know that you necessarily messed up - but most people will line the bottoms of their fuges with really fine sand. This is the most ideal surface area available for bacteria. As you noted - the large macropores in the CC substrate tend to trap detritus all too well for a fuge. But - different strokes for different folks. What does not work for some may flourish for others.

I'll see where others weigh in on this one before telling you to switch it out if you can . . .

    Hi,

The only place I would use CC is over a reverse-flow UGF to prevent detritus etc from becoming trapped in the substrate. However, I don't highly recommend that. As M-Ocean Man pointed out, fine sand has the best surface area for your bacteria.

Seafloor special grade is my favorite...fine enough, but not so fine it blows all over the place...I personally don't think there is a good place for CC in most systems...as mentioned it tends to trap too much waste and cause potential problems because of that...you can vac it regularly and get most of the detritus out...but that probably defeats the purpose of you putting in the fuge in the first place.

Well, not sure what to think now. I guess I will just let it go and see what happens!
