I looked into this a while ago as there is some coastal seagrass near me.. not sure what variety.. but from what I recall for aquariums, most you will hear about is Turtle grass - (thalassia?). It's not as easy to acquire sea grass as it is say mangroves. Not sure why. I am pretty sure it's harder to maintain.

From my research back then I seem to recall it was recommended to have a mature deep sand bed, intense lighting, and supplements - Iron and Magnesium.

I bet you could find info on seahorse.org.

Whatever you find out, please keep me posted. I always thought that would be a cool and natural habitat for seahorses.

I have a link to a place here in Florida that grows Red Mangrove, Manatee Grass, and Turtle Grass. Their prices do not appear to be too outrageous. Maybe someone there can help answer your question? I emailed them once and had a quick reply to my question. I hope this will help you. :)
