    For now I think it will be a standard 10g. I have a HOB filter and Seachem Flourish black sand substrate. I just need to get some media to put in it, and a 10g will only cost $13 at Walmart...though I will need a light.

    Maybe 2x 6500K T8 bulbs from Walmart/Lowe's in a DIY fixture...

    Yeah a couple shop lights from Walmart is plenty. Or a 20" CF fixture from petsmart.

    I just checked, it is 13.6 miles to the closest LFS. 20 minute drive, and lots of stackable 5 gallon buckets and a dolly. Nano reef in college, no problem!

    Now that is some great research lol. I think the nano is doable, but a planted tank would be easier to mainmtain IMO. He's gotta keep the grades up, and a reef in his room might be to distyracting lol. :)

    +1, planted is the way to go.:) and if he can scrap up some money he could do an ecopico reef.
