Here are some sneak peeks at a prototype of a new LED lighting system - the Seastorm - from Sealife Systems. The fixture is black anodized aluminum with rows of 1 watt white and 1 watt blue LEDs. The production version will be all black, including the mounting legs and be available this fall. The 'Seastorm' is a fish only light (75 - 80 lumens per LED) and will be an interesting contender to the Marineland Double Bright LED lamps with similar price points. The 18" Seastorm comes with 8 white LEDs and 4 blue and will cost just $99.

    Here's the general rundown:

Small unit uses 12 LEDs. It can span 18"-24" ($99)

Medium unit uses 18 LEDs. It spans 30"-36"

Large unit uses 24 LEDs. This only fits 48" tanks.

Sealife Systems is also working on a programmable controller that will run up to four fixtures and give you full control of LED lighting cycles. What you see here is in active development.

    Available fall 2010.

Attached are pics of the Seastorm in different lighting modes... the blue LEDs are supposed to have a touch of UV and are reported to be pretty intense.

    Correction

The LED's average 75-80 lumens each, not total! The total ouput of the 24" fixture is approximately 950 lumens.

Honestly, it looks identical to the Marineland Double Bright LED fixture. Identical statistics as well. I think you should make the LED fixtures in a number of different sizes w/ more or less LEDS depending on the size instead of being able to pull the legs out to make the fixture longer or short. ex, 18" has 12 LEDs and the 24" has 18 LEDs. The expandable fixtures always leave dark spots when stretched to their max. As seen in the 2nd photo of the 2nd post:

    Clarification

The photographs show a 24" unit on a 30" tank. This is the reason for the dark patches.

However, the previous gentelman's concerns are legitimate and have occured to us. We are weighing options for changing the size of the unit or using different lenses in an effort to address them.

    I agree.

    Why so stubby?

It should run the length of the aquarium.

Our original prototype is a 24" unit, so named because it is designed to span an 18-24" tank.

My tank at home is 30" wide. These photos were taken using the 24" prototype on my 30 inch tank.

We are making a medium sized unit designed to accomodate 30-36" tanks. At the time this thread was posted, we did not have such a unit. Thus, I used the 24" unit for the photos.

I hope that clears up the confusion, let me know.

    Those look pretty cool!

For a fish only tank, it looks like they'd be pretty good: sort of like a MH and T5 rolled into one.

Be interesting to see how long those LEDs are supposed to last.

    Nice lamp.

Are there any fixtures or prototypes/plans for an LED fixture in the future that can be used for a full reef?
