    Hi,

I tried the hobby once before but without enough budget or patience. I have a 5 year-old daughter who has not only given me the patience for anything, her endless giggles watching clown fish frolic in anemones and her boundless enthusiasm for asking about sea life have convinced me it's time to clean up the old 40-gallon acrylic tank and build a mixed reef.

I'm still on a fixed budget but convinced not to cut corners and to do it right. That means a lot of DIY for me. When we built the stand a number of years ago, I really had no plan for where I was going and didn't even leave room for a sump larger than 10 gallons. Step one has been to drill the tank and start planning for plumbing through the wall so I can have a 30-gallon sump and a clean-looking display. I'm actually going to have to learn plumbing and a little cabinetry after all this time and I'm looking forward to it.

So far it's been a blast for me and I really appreciate the slow pace. I just hope I can get things rolling before my little girl loses her patience. I've been lurking here for a few weeks and figured it's time to introduce myself and start taking some pictures of the process.

Thanks for the info I've already gleaned.

I am not sure if it is the the tank that makes me happy or what you get when other people see the tank. My wife helps with water changes and looks in on the tank two or more times a day. A certain time of the day a sunbeam hits the tank and she loves the look. Hope you and your daughter have a blast setting up this tank. Welcome back.
